In March 2015, Marl announced a partnership with Nanoco Technologies to produce high-efficiency LED lighting with high colour performance using cadmium-free CFQD® Quantum Dot technology; a world first, signalling a new era in LED lighting.
The North-West based companies launched the world's first CFQD® Quantum Dot lighting product, the Orion QD, 2 months later. The product has already been adapted for applications across the country, including a version of the product enhanced to stimulate plant growth.
Rob Woodhouse, Marl's Design Manager, tells us about the latest developments from Marl using LEDs and CFQD® Quantum Dot technology:
"Marl now have a unique and innovative new technology to bring to market, working closely with Nanoco to develop a range of Cadmium-Free Quantum Dot (CFQD®) enhanced LED products to enable previously unseen colour and light quality levels from any spectra of the colour reproduction chart with vivid and saturated colours using standard LED components as the energy light source. This not only allows custom individual colour selection for customers, but also exceptionally high 'average' CRI across the full range of colour tests from warm blackbody line (BBL) temperatures (1400+ CCT) to extremely cold temperatures (10,000+ CCT) maintaining excellent colour reproduction of objects to bring quality of light to a whole new dimension.
CFQD® quantum dot technology is currently being introduced into the next generation of Ultra High Resolution and 4K LCD TVs. Key benefits of this include the ability to colour select and colour match unique brand colours, custom selecting wavelengths of interest from 420nm upwards for special applications (health, livestock, plants, food), to ultra-high quality white light for special applications. CFQD® quantum dot technology for the global LED lighting market is clearly at an early stage of development and has untapped potential and unique properties to significantly expand into the LED market over the next decade."
